Five Months Sure Flew By Fast. New Artwork Being Made. AK-12 Progressives

Been ignoring this blog for a while, apologies to everyone following. I've had a really busy 5 months and getting busier! Business is great and I'm still accepting commissions. Finally settling down to a more regular work schedule and doing more personal work this last 2 weeks. Here are some progressives of what's coming up next.

AND the main website has FINALLY been updated after 2 (maybe 3) long years!!

Here's the >>link<< to it.

Hope you guys enjoy it. Till the next update.

Barrett M107 with USMC Operator

I've taken on this immediately after the Mk48 piece. It was done fairly quickly and I was sort of happy with it. I was recently told my research material were that of an M107 instead of an M82A1. Very glad to have been corrected.

Details first :D

The weapon itself

Here are the progressive step by step from start to finish. Start off with a rough sketch. This piece was completely done digitally from scratch.

The pose gets refined.

Once the pose is set, time to clean up the lines. It looks nicer now.

Before starting tonal values, I double check the proportions. It looks good, the dude feels like 6'2" or so. Pretty close to what I want.

Adding tonal values.

Once the tonal values are added, I start putting in the textures and color overlays. Then I adjust the colors from there. I suffer from a common type of color-blindness known as Deuteranomaly, so the digital platform is a little more forgiving in terms of adding colors.

And here we have the final. This piece took maybe 30 hours or less. Of course I wasn't doing it 8 hours a day, I have other paying jobs to take care of. But it is probably the fastest piece I've done so far.

I hope everyone likes this. I'm already working on a next piece. A friend has agreed to lend me his face for it. Lets hope it doesn't turn out crap.

100th Post!! Mk48 Mod0 Complete.

Finally reached 100th posts. After 5 long years. Really need to be more active here.

The Mk48 was just finished. Now I can move on to other things. If anyone was actively following this piece, my apologies for taking forever.

MK48 gunner WIP

Progressive images. This piece really took too damned long. I'm hoping to finish it off before the end of September and move on to other pieces in cold storage.

There are some perspective and anatomical errors here and there though. Since its never gonna be perfect I'll leave it as is and let the audience critique it. There's no point being stuck perfecting a single piece of work. Need to move on!

Sketches!!

Been busy over the last 6 weeks or so and I've not kept this blog updated.  I've even missed my weekly running schedule for a month.  Before putting up the serious stuff here are some sketches.

Mk48 Rework Update 2

Finishing up the linework little by little. Getting the proportions right is probably the biggest challenge. Added a bit of tones to get a feel of how things will work out, but will probably throw it out later on when I start to get into detail.

Here's a view of the head.

Mk48 Rework Progress Update

2 steps forward one step back. Triple check source materials to confirm everything, then triple check again. This is why it takes me a while to get these done :D

Mk48 Rework

A lot of the groundwork for this piece had been done a couple of years ago. But one thing after another left me unable to get it wrapped up. Something else bothered me a lot about the pose and I decided to give it a full rework.

New Sketchbook Test Drive

Bought a new sketchbook. Its a new version of the Monologue sketchbook. The original version had a more flimsy cover and slightly yellowish paper which is on the thin side. The new Monologue has a stiffer cover (so much so that its hard to open the book up to draw) and has bright white paper which is slightly thicker. The good news is the paper still takes water like the old version, yet because its slightly thicker, tend to not buckle so much. Its not bad considering its SG$12. Only 72 pages though, but you get thicker paper so I guess its a trade-off I can live with.

Different Covers

Paper has different color. New version on top. Obviously gotta take it out for a spin.

Works well with inks.

Testing out a new pen too.  One of those brush tipped Uchida Marvys.

It handles watercolors fairly well.  But the downside is, being pure white, the inks does show through if you use both sides of the paper.  Personally its not a major issue for me since sketchbooks are really just practice for me.  Its a decent sketchbook for its price.  I hope to finish this book quickly so I can get another.

Say No to Moleskine

Overrated. For its price, the Moleskine sketchbook paper isn't versatile enough. Its smooth surface isn't bad for inks, but when you try to apply a light watercolor wash it just doesn't take water. I'm just trying to finish it up never use another one again.

In Soviet Russia....

Concept "Black Eagle" Tank. (Chyornyy Oryol) This was a cancelled project. The tank was based off the body of a lengthened T-80 chassis. It got cancelled due to the fact the T-80 performed poorly in the First Chechen war. The reliability issues of the T-80 design was apparent and it presumably got translated into the Black Eagle prototype. However its easy to blame the design of the tank when the tank platoons were sent into the capital Grozny with little training, no infantry support and lack of tactical knowledge of the area. For better or worse, this model is now consigned to model kits and the history books. Shoot over to wikipedia and read about it and the T-80.

Indian T-72 Ajeya variant with ERA armour. Ok its not Russian, but its of Russian make.

Big Cats

Leopard 2A6 rolling through. Once again, pardon the inaccuracies. This is just a practice sketch and I try to work with watercolors directly. So there's really no planning.

I have a few 1/144 miniatures to take reference from. As well as photos on the internets.

Update. Leopard 2A4 with pen and watercolor.
